On the contrary to Bill's answer, you actually see places riding the tracks that you cannot see by car and sometimes only with some extreme hiking. If you have the time, take the train! It's a great ride compared to a plane if you're not in a huge hurry; you can sleep, stand, and walk to another car to sit elsewhere whenever you want.
I've done the scenic roadtrip and the train from San Diego to Seattle. I prefer the train if I am driving and do not have the extra couple days to cruise the coastline highway. The scenery on the coast highway makes it the best option by far! But it took me about 3 days along highways 1 and 101 just to get to Northern California, and that left little time for venturing and exploring.

Yes, train travel is a wonderful option providing you can find a timing and schedule that works. As Eric says, you can wander the train—relax and watch the scenery in the Lounge car, take meals in the Dining car, etc. You can also meet lots of interesting people on trains, simply because you happen to be riding to same train. I have always found it to be an enriching and enlivening experience.

Not really, best way is by automobile. Train travel is a good way to travel between certain points in certain areas of the country, but there would be so much missed by just sticking to the rails
