Drove to Morton in the evening to go to Rainier the next day. Stayed at The Seasons Motel - very nice but overpriced, especially considering the braking trucks on rt 12 all night long.

Toured Mt Rainier Park with couchsurfing friend Fatima. I had hosted her in Klamath Falls and gone to Crater Lake for a day there. Met briefly with the other climber at the end of the day to get our bureaucratic climbing permission requirements taken care of.
-
Went to Yakima for Fatima to get a bus back to Portland. Spent the night. Found a great coffee shop - North Town I think.

Met the other climber at lunch time to start our climb. We organized and packed gear and carried heavy packs 2-3 hours up to Glacier Basin. In the morning he announced he did not want to carry a full pack any further and we hiked back out.

After the aborted climb of Rainier I went back to Yakima. It's the closest place to the east side of the park and is in the right direction. Stayed at the Sun Country Inn, a good deal with nice rooms and very quiet. The next day I worked in the coffee shop I found previously until late evening then drove towards Spokane and camped in the van at a rest area along the Columbia River.

Drove to Spokane to visit a friend from Corvallis a long time ago, Teena. She and John had me for dinner and invited me to stay on their futon. I also looked for potential new mountaineering boots at Mountain Gear and REI.

From Spokane I drove to Missoula, spending the night in the van near Lookout Pass. Monday night there was great live music at the Top Hat downtown. First a rock band and a few pints, then a bluegrass band and a few more pints.:) I found a forest road east of town to camp along.

Spent the day driving to Columbus to meet two climbers for an attempt at Granite Peak. We got some gear straightened out in the evening and had dinner at a local bar/grill. I packed my own pack in an empty parking lot with a light and found an empty fishing campground for the night.

From the 17th to the 19th we were on Granite Peak, Roscoe is the nearest town. On the 17th one guy used a horse packer for a ride up to Rosebud Saddle, and there was a minimum on the number of horses so the other guy and I had our gear transported too and we hiked up quickly. They decided to get as far up Froze-to-Death plateau as possible and try for the summit the next day. On the 18th we climbed. Things went very very slowly and at some point I told them we could continue but were risking getting back after dark and having a hard time finding camp in the dark. Which is what happened, so it was a long day. On the 19th we made the previous nights dinner for breakfast and started the hike out around noon. We got to the trailhead around 6. I got dinner in Roscoe and went to Red Lodge, camping at a trailhead outside town I knew of from the past.

I stayed in Red Lodge Friday night and Saturday night. I washed up Sat morning and spent most of the day at Coffee Factory Roasters catching up on things. Then I took a nap and made dinner. I had planned to go out for a beer but decided not to bother. Sunday I went to the coffee shop again until late afternoon.

From Red Lodge I drove over Beartooth Pass, an incredible road only passable in summer. After some steep climbing it goes to Cooke City and the NE entrance to Yellowstone. I had timed it so that the fee booth was closed (so I wouldn't pay a full entrance fee just to pass through) and drove to the N entrance where I found a place to park and sleep a short way from the park.

On Monday I planned to go to Missoula. I was almost there when my van broke down which turned out to be the fuel pump. After wasting most of the week and over $600 (which I am still contesting) at vtec, which is for some reason AAA certified, the problem was diagnosed and repaired in less than a day Friday by Billy at Scotts EQ. I had found a couchsurfing host and stayed until Saturday in order to swim in the Clark Fork and leave in the evening when it was cool.
