Columbus finally succeeded in getting a sponsor. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain gave him three ships and supplies for his voyage. On August 3, 1492, he set sail from Palos, Spain with 104 men, equipment, and supplies.

Arriving at the Canary Islands, Columbus had the sails changed on the Santa Maria because it was too big and slow to keep up with the other ships. He loaded the ships with fresh water, fruit, and other supplies and left on September 6, 1492.

Columbus' ships traveled about 150 miles each day. The crew worked the sails, checked the ropes and cargo, cleaned the deck, and did other chores to keep the ships in good order.

A sailor aboard the Pinta sighted land on October 12, 1492. Columbus believed he was on an island in Asia and named the island San Salvador.

On November 21, 1492, the captain of the Pinta sailed off to explore on his own. Unfortunately, on Christmas day the Santa Maria ran aground and was wrecked off the coast of Hispaniola. Because the Nina was too small for all the men, Columbus was forced to leave about 40 behind on the island. The fort they built was named Navidad. On January 4, 1493, the Nina set sail for Spain.

Finally, on March 15, 1493, Columbus arrived back in Palos, Spain. He was given a hero's welcome. Columbus made three more trips to the new world. He died believing that he had found a water route to Asia.
