Arrived in Lihue at night. Turns out the rental company didn't have any Jeeps left (what's the point of making a reservation?) so they put us in a Sebring. Nothing makes you feel more like a tourist than driving a Sebring. We picked up a Jeep the next day.

We booked a guest room at a cottage in Kalihiwai for the first four days of the trip. The North Shore (Princeville / Hanalei) is rainier than the South Shore (Poipu) and it's also a bit of a drive to get to the South Shore. Since a lot of our activities for the first half of the trip were on the South Shore, it would have been a better idea to book a room in Poipu for the first half and then move North to Hanalei afterwards. That said, our cottage in Kalihiwai wasn't bad at all.

Hanalei is an amazingly chill little town. Our favorite find in the first few days was the Famers' Market. I'm pretty sure that it's scheduled for every Tuesday at 11AM, and is a great place to find fresh local produce. That's one of the great things about staying in a cottage with a kitchen instead of a hotel - you get to go food shopping and cook new things.

Obviously not a secret, but just hard enough to get to that it stays empty...Secret Beach is a great little place in between Kalihiwai Bay and the Kilauwea National Wildlife Refuge. To get there, make your first right onto Secret Beach Rd. from Kalihiwai Rd, park at the end and then take the short hike down to the beach.

Day trip to sunny Poipu was complete with a lunch at Puka Dogs and snacks at Savage Shrimp (truck). This is where Byron got his inspiration for his own variation of Island Style peel-n-eat shrimp
-
Stopped at Shrimp Station for more shrimp. I think the Savage Shrimp truck on the side of the road in Poipu is better.

We moved to the Blue Anini Cottage for the second half of our trip. It was an amazing little one-bedroom place with a great kitchen and deck. Check out their website for more info: http://www.kauai-vacation-rental-cottage.com/section0/index.htm Of course, this being Kauai, we had a resident rooster that insisted on waking us up every morning at 5AM.

Hooked up with Kayak Kauai in Wailua ( http://www.kayakkauai.com/ ) for a trip to Secret Falls. It was a great afternoon. The waterfall is great and the guided hike was informative and fun.

Auntie Angeline's for very traditional lomi lomi massages. This was awesome.

End of the road. We parked here and embarked on a the 2 mile cliffside Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi'ai Beach.
- total distance: 180 miles (290 km)
