Starting point
-
Met up with fellow MMI representatives at school to park cars and take a taxi to the airport
-
An hour lay-over, Victoria's grandma brought us Einstein Bagels, flight to Austin departs at 11:20 am
The Best Buy photograph is what I tweeted with the hashtag #MKE, saying that Milwaukee's airport needed one. Mitchell International's Twitter page responded with a photograph of one located on their 2nd floor within the hour. -
We've arrived!! Time to take a taxi to the CC
-
Pick-up badges and SXSW grab-bag. The Convention Center is the main location for shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs for hotel visitors of SXSW. Purchased a shuttle badge for $70. The badge allows unlimited access to pick-ups and drop-offs from our hotel to the Convention Center, and vice versa. (shuttles operate between the hours of 9am-3am, daily)
-
Check-in, drop bags off, head out to meet Martin Atkins right away
-
Drop-off site, headed towards Martin's hotel for meet-up
-
Met up with MMI instructor and SXSW speaker Martin Atkins
-
Time to eat; their pizza was NOT good, at all... did not return.
-
Back to unpack and get ready for the night at SXSW
-
Back to wreak havoc on SXSW
-
Just a location that was near the route that we started walking while exploring downtown Austin
-
Just covering/learning the outline of where the majority of the festivities downtown take place
-
Our route continues
-
Crossed under the 35, seeing crowds of people, curious to see what lies on this side of the freeway
-
-
Where we turned off of E 5th St.
-
Where we turned back onto 7th to head back towards downtown
-
Just walking around, enjoying the experience/scenery
-
...walking...
-
Caught a shuttle back to the hotel for the night.
-
Back for the evening. Goodnight Austin.
Here is a - SXSW : Day 1 - video that fellow MMI representative Tony Harris filmed/edited by capturing some of the events that took place today. - Wednesday, March 14, 2012
-
Fresh off of 3 hours of sleep, time to get up and head downtown with the MMI crew to meet Martin Atkins for coffee and discuss delegations during his seminar.
-
Back downtown, time to head to Martin's hotel
-
Met Martin with the team, met a woman named Katie, may be Martin's assistant?? Mike (from MMI) and Steve arrived, headed back to convention center to set up Martin's merch. booth outside the room he was speaking in
-
Pushed a bellman's cart full of merch and muffins to the CC, Martin's seminar was on the 4th floor
-
I had to push the bellman's cart back to the hotel
-
Headed back to pick up the bellman's cart to transport Martin's merch. and muffins back to his room.
-
Pushed the cart a city block back to the CC, around to the special 4th floor elevators, and back around to Martin's merch. stand
-
Returned with Martin's merch., Mike S. gave us wrong hotel key, contacted Martin, couldn't reach him. Left Martin's merch. on the 14th floor with John and headed back to the 4th floor of the CC to find Martin.
-
Ran through CC trying to find Martin, couldn't. Heading back to hotel desk to reason with the man for a different key in the meantime.
-
Upon walking in, John called and said that the housekeeping lady let her in and he was on his way down from the 14th floor. As we were walking out, Martin and Katie walked back in. I informed him that his merch. was delivered safely to his room.
-
Walked from the CC down 1st Street, took a right down Congress, headed towards 6th St., which seemed to have the most people on it the first night
-
Victoria informed us that an MMI instructor of ours, by the name of Sue Schraeder, was hosting an event somewhere on 500 5th St., we started heading towards 500 5th St. We were heading down East 5th Street, we found out... at the end, that we were looking for 500 West 5th Street, we missed the event
-
Following the numbers, just one block north of 5th, we follow the addresses past the I-35
-
Following the same route as the night before
-
-
-
It is here that we realized that the event must be on 500 West 5th, and it was over 10 blocks from where we were, we missed it, Tony heads back to hotel, John, Victoria and I continue walking
-
We decide to take 6th all the way up
-
We take 6th 'til it ends, then round the block
-
Turned down 5th
-
Headed down Red River
-
-
Noticed a bill on the wall for a show in this empty lot, featuring hip-hop/rap artists: XV, Danny Brown, A$AP Rocky and Schoolboy Q at 8:30pm, we will be back
-
-
Just wandering around, soaking up the atmosphere
-
-
-
-
-
-
Decide to head back to drop off my Broadjam folder and materials with the intent to return shortly after
-
Back to drop off materials, pick up Tony
-
Back to walk around, check out that XV, Danny Brown show if we make it in time
-
We made it back to 6th Street, walking up and down, received a phone call from fellow MMI classmate Mo, heading towards Red River to meet him
-
Back to Red River, Victoria goes her own way
-
Looking for Mo on 4th and Red River
-
Found Mo, continue walking towards either something to eat, or the show in the vacant lot
-
Walk to the end of Red River, looking for something to eat, met up with Mo's friends Nick and Domingo of the blog Crowd Noize, they walk with us, John separates and heads towards an Action Bronson show up the road
-
Stop back to check out show, Tony took a picture of myself and artist XV after his set, Tony also captured great footage of (and a short Q&A with) Danny Brown as well as footage of Kendrick Lamar and others through the backstage gate behind the stage, Mo, Nick and Domingo met us inside during the show
-
We find a pizza shop by the name of Hoboken Pie, it's after we get food that John hits up to meet back up, Mo, Nick and Domingo are still at the show that we left
-
We meet up with John and head back towards the concert
-
The concert is now at capacity, we are denied entry, John has photographs taken of him, we meet at the back gate behind the stage to get good shots of stars backstage, Kendrick Lamar was eating fistfuls of Fruity Pebbles directly from the box, we meet up with Mo and friends shortly after
-
Back to Mo's car for some more CDs of his to pass out
-
Eventually heading back to 6th Street, take a turn down 4th to get there
-
We decide to take San Jacinto Blvd up to 6th
-
Back to 6th

-
Woke up after 11, ended up getting less than 5 hours of sleep, John and Victoria were getting ready to head out back to Martin's hotel for a morning meet-up, I imagined the meet-up to be a time to go over what we've seen so far and what we plan on seeing during the rest of the trip, I over-slept and couldn't imagine that it was imperative that I attend this meeting, my friends Roland and Tree from Chicago called around noon when I was getting ready for the day, they said they were an hour and a half away, considering the shuttles were now taking upwards of 45 minutes to reach us and another 45 just to make it to the Convention Center (due to covering 20 other hotels on our route) I decided to wait
-
Roland and Tree arrive from their road-trip that started in Miami via Atlanta, they get ready for the evening and we head out around 3:00pm, we are in Roland's vehicle
-
-
-
-
Right on 9th
-
-
Followed it down to 2nd, took a right
-
Found a spot to park, all day/night $20, 2nd and Congress, we left our phone chargers in the vehicle
-
Roland, Tree and I start walking around
-
Back to 6th, 2 men approached Tree to tell him that they're fans of his, Tree didn't know them
-
-
Just wandering around, looking for food
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Back on 6th, we find food at Chipotle's
- total distance: 1,099 miles (1.769 km)
